act one

1938.
he has nothing.
she has everything.

Mark Stuart Dance Theatre is introducing When Change Comes : A Movement Forward as a nationwide social change project aimed at high school and college students. Why? Because we believe that change starts small.  And, that a handful of passionate and empowered young adults is all it takes to turn small everyday acts of kindness into a tidal wave of tolerance.

Here’s the plan...

  1. Inspire young adults with a powerful story about equality and tolerance

  2. Host post-performance discussions encouraging three positive changes we can all make:

    1. Having honest conversations with those who disagree about equality and tolerance

    2. Committing small everyday acts of kindness

    3. Learning to truly “see” each other

  3. Create a community via social media to keep students inspired, engaged, and accountable

"When you go, be sure to pick my heart up and bring it back to me. I can't stop thinking about how important this message is. Completely blown away..."

Brandon Hudson -

"It will make your heart burst and your eyes tear. You'll leave wanting to be a better person."

Sharada Das Lavigne -

Three year plan

2018: Launch

2019: University & Regional Tour

2020: Licensing

When Change Comes isn’t just one story. It’s all of our stories. So why should we be the only
ones to tell it?

Working with a licensing house like  Music Theater InternationaI  or  Broadway Licensing,
Universities and high schools around the country will have the opportunity to mount a production
of When Change Comes.

NOMINATED 2016 BEST THEATRICAL EXPERIENCE OFF-BROADWAY

Three eras

Three love stories

Three chances to make a change

ABOUT THE SHOW

When Change Comes is a powerful dance musical that asks one question:

Can the act of “seeing” each other without judgment or fear break the cycle of intolerance?

Featuring a cast of world-renowned dancers, singers, and musicians, When Change Comes transports audiences through a century of music, movement, and human connection in the shadow of our nation's most defining moments.  Using Mark Stuart Dance Theatre’s explosive brand of storytelling, When Change Comes follows three love stories set against the backdrops of the Great Depression, the Civil Rights Movement, and the LGBTQ Rights Movement.  Danced to hit standards from the 1930’s, 1960’s, and the 2000’s, the show features 7 dancers, 3 vocalists and a 5-piece band.

When Change Comes aims to inspire and empower audiences to create positive change in their communities. This theatrical experience includes a 90 minute performance of When Change Comes followed by discussions with Mark Stuart and the cast.  We will ask:  how might we commit to small everyday acts of kindness, learn to truly see each other, and build empathetic dialogue about equality and tolerance.

A Movement Forward
, exists as a challenge: Can we all turn seemingly small acts of kindness into a tidal wave of tolerance?
